Rhythm exercise no.1. While tapping your foot and counting out loud
in 4/4 time (one, two, three, four) play a whole note, two half notes,
four quarter notes, two half note, one whole note and then say "and stop"
when done, as if on the first beat of the bar after the end of the exercise.
"One, two three, four and stop".
-
Scales. Play the open position "C Major" scale. We will call
this the "C" scale from now on. Call the notes while playing them.
Remember, it is not important that you play quickly. This test is
to display your knowledge of the notes so get them right, not fast!
Look this up on the lessons page if you are not familiar with it.
Note: Start on "C" at the third fret of the fifth string, play up to "G"
on the first string, back down to open "E" on the 6th string and then finish
by playing the notes back up to the "C" where you started.
-
Chord exercise no. 1. The student will be asked to strum the following
chords and stay on each chord until the instructor indicates to move on
the next one. Open position: C, E, A, D, G and then the student will
end by playing a whole note strum on a C chord while counting, "one, two,
three, four and stop".
-
I've been using Mel Bay books but whatever method book you use find the
equivalent to the following. The student should be able to sight
read up to and including page 12 of the Mel Bay, Method for Modern Guitar
book 1 or up to page 38 of Mel Bay's: Mastering the Guitar 1A. The
student should perform "Aura Lee" on page 12 from the first book or "Minor
Song" on page 38 of the second book mentioned. By perform I mean:
1) play the melody while accompanied by the teacher, 2) accompany the teacher's
melody with the proper chords and then 3) Play the piece at your own pace
using chord-melody. See the chord-melody lesson for specific instructions.
-
Last (and probably least) is exercise #1. I will have this in the
lessons but simply put: Line up 4 fingers to the first 4 frets. On
the first string play, open, 1st fret, 2nd fret, 3rd fret, 4th fret, (then
back down) 3rd fret, 2nd fret and the 1st fret before moving on to each
of the six strings. On the sixth string play the open string after
coming back down to end the piece.
That's it! Good luck! - Michael Chodosh
