- Rhythm exercise no.2. While tapping your foot and counting out loud
in 4/4 time (one, two, three, four) play a whole note, two half notes,
four quarter notes, 8 eighth notes, four quarter notes, two half note,
one whole note and then say "and stop" when done, as if on the first beat
of the bar after the end of the exercise. "One, two three, four and
stop" Note: while playing the eighth notes be sure to count "one
and two and three and four and" while playing each note. Also, be
sure to use proper alternate picking!.
-
Scales. Play the open position "G" scale. Call the notes while
playing them. Look this up on the lessons page if you are not
familiar with it. It's the same as a C major scale but you start on G on
the 6th string and move all of the Fs to F# (raise them one fret).
Also, play the A minor pentatonic scale at the fifth position. We call
this the 1,6 minor pentatonic scale (1st finger plays the root at the 6th
string).
-
Chords: Exercise no. 2. Add the open position chords: C7, E7, A7, D7
and G7 to the chord exercise no. 1 used in the GP1 test. Learn the barre
chord "F" at the first fret. Memorize the notes on the 6th
string and be prepared to play the major barre chord that the instructor calls
out. i.e. . . G at the 3rd fret, A at the 5th fret, Bb at the 6th fret and
so on.
-
Whatever method book you use find the
equivalent to the following. The student should be able to sight
read from page 13 to 26 of the Mel Bay, Method for Modern Guitar
book 1
-
The
student should perform "Shenandoah" on page 26.
- Answer theory question about: repeat signs, duets, chords, pick up notes
ties, and ledger lines.
- Exercise #1A. The same as Exercise #1 but play back to the open 1st
string. Make sure to use alternate picking, playing eighth notes and
tapping your foot.
- Play the C major triads up and back down the neck on the first three
strings. Melody on the first string starting with open E, play each C
triad up to the 12th fret and then back down to the open 1st string.
That's it! Good luck! - Michael Chodosh
